All about Battery Recycling

September 11, 2013

In today’s world, people belonging to the upper middle class, own a car or any form of automobile for their personal commutation. Some automobiles run with the help of batteries and therefore there has been an introduction of a newer and eco friendly activity of recycling the batteries instead of purchasing newer ones. This activity has come up to be the most sought after method of recycling products.

Battery recyclingis done only after knowing the inner contents of the particular battery that is to be recycled. Batteries usually contain heavy metals like mercury, lead, cadmium, nickel that are specifically customized to react with electrolytes and in turn it produces electricity. These heavy metals, especially lead can be highly dangerous to the environment when contaminated with water or land. Therefore, laws have ensured the Lead content in these batteries needs to be recycled to create newer Lead batteries or other products that contain Lead.

How are Batteries Recycled?

Developed countries like USA, UK, and Japan have certain amenities that enable battery recycling in its correct process. The casings are removed to extract the metals and acids present inside the batteries. The lead is sent for creating newer batteries and the acids are neutralized using alkaline solutions and then tested if they are still fatal. If they are not found harmful, they are released to sewers that dispose the off safely or there can be another alternative in creating sodium sulphate that is usually used to make detergents, glass materials and also used in the textile manufacturing units.

Apart from the rising trend in recycling Automobile Batteries, there are options of recycling the other batteries that we use in our mobile phones, torches, watches, clocks etc. Zinc Carbon Batteries are separated into three parts zinc and manganese concentrates, plastics and paper are separated and the steel separated from it. These parts are sent to manufactures that use these components in creating newer products. Lithium batteries are shredded or beaten and the electrolytes are neutralized with basic caustic solution. Ferrous and non ferrous materials are separated and sold to metal scrap dealers who in turn create newer materials.

Batteries and Nature

The trend of recycled batteries has still not caught up in the developing countries where there aren’t any facilities of recycling services. In developed countries where recycled batteries are available, customers find it cheaper than buying new batteries. Recycled batteries save on newer production of plastic casings and newer extraction of metals for filling up these batteries. This in turn save the environment and saves the extinction of the materials that are used in batteries. It is in a way refurbishing batteries for the use of people.

Benefits of E-waste Recycling

Benefits of E-waste recycling

Annually, electronics manufacturing companies produce thousands of electronic products that tend to the growing population and their needs. These electronic goods like computers, mobile phones and televisions are manufactured using plastic, lead, mercury, cadmium, aluminum, copper, silver and other non- bio degradable substances which are usually hazardous to environment. . Hazardous materials that make up the electronic goods cannot be land filled as it mixes with the soil and the ground water table creating toxicities in the soil and water.

To save the environment from e-waste the concept of e-waste recycling is gaining in popularity. E-waste recycling means using the already used electronic product. It can be done by using the usable parts of the product in creating new or re-furbished items. The facts that have been extracted are such that every one million mobile phones when recycled or re furbished- 35 thousand pounds of copper, 772 pounds of silver, 75 pounds of gold, and 33 pounds of palladium apart from the plastic encasing are recovered. Whenlaptops are recycled, the energy saved is equivalent to the electricity consumed by more than 3,500 US homes in a year

Electronic goods can be either recycled or refurbished by changing the hardware or by upgrading the software in case of laptops and computers. The glass screens from the television screens can be extracted to create newer televisions or other devices. Mobile phone batteries can be recycled separately and furnished with newer materials enabling it to be used in other devices.

Developing countries lack the infrastructure and therefore the pressure for recreating and recycling electronic goods cannot be handled by them resulting in the hazardous effect on the environment. Therefore, the initiative of recycling should be taken up with zest by the developed countries to produce recycled goods.

Guiyu in China is considered to be the e-waste capital of the world as this city employs thousands of workers who disassemble the wasted electronic goods and extract the parts that can be recycled and used to create further electronic goods.

Metal recycling is a very innovative thought as it saves up on the cost and energy incurred on creating newer products frequently. One can also be socially helpful by donating their used electronic goods by upgrading them and helping the underprivileged in their society.

Why computer recycling is important?

Why computer recycling is important?

As technology is changing very fast, handling of obsolete computers is becoming a major problem for everyone. The solution is computer recycling. Instead of throwing out old computers, it is necessary to find out ways for reusing its different parts. We have jotted down a few reasons why computer recycling is important?

Environmental Hazards – Computers are bulky structures and when dumped in the garbage without much thought they can cause adverse environmental effects. Computer parts contain various metals like mercury, lead, cadmium, silicon, aluminum and others. These metals get mixed with air, water and soil. It is estimated that a computer can contain up to 2 kilograms of lead which when mixed with soil and water can cause tremendous environmental hazards.

Saving Resources – Moreover, recycling of metals diminishes the need of extracting precious resources from the mines and thus saves the mother earth in the long run.

Cost – efficient – Computers also contain plastics, wires, glass, electronic boards etc which can be easily dismantled. The components can be sold as scrap to many companies which deal with these products. Another way of recycling computers is to sell these to stores which deal with refurbished items. They can integrate different parts from various computers and can make new computers which can be used. Refurbished ones are often low in cost. Many growing companies which require computers for their operational purposes can get these at bulk rate.

Developed countries generally export their electronic waste products to developing countries. But with time it is expected that regulation about acceptance of used & toxic computers products will be stringent in developing countries also.

Those who cannot afford expensive laptops or new branded computers can buy refurbished computers. These items can either be donated to a school, any non-profit organization or to someone who is less privileged. We often discard computers which are few years old and prefer having the latest ones. But it often happens, just by changing few parts we get the required results. Thus we not only manage to save money but also actively contribute to the recycling process.

Recycling of computer is becoming so important that many multinational companies are now incorporating recycling in their policies. They are providing their customers the total recycle facility. According to many companies, it is helping them to lower the cost of procurement of raw materials.
