Metals are used in a variety of products, features and installations in different settings. It may be used and electrical wiring, cooking utensils, appliances, building materials, sculptures as well as decorative artwork, grill work etc. Different metals have different characteristics and properties but almost all metals are extremely strong and resilient. This also means they can be reused repurposed and recycled very easily.

Disposing of metal elements as regular trash only increases the burden on our planet and the environment. This is also why we at Manville Recycling very strongly recommend that residential and commercial property owners opt for scrap metal recycling in Toronto rather than adding any metal products to the local landfills

The Importance Of Recycling Metal

The versatility of metal isn’t just in the fact that it can be melded into various forms, shapes and products. In fact, it can also be melted and recycled into various new products and items. This means you don’t need to discard any metal items in the trash. Let’s take a look at how and why it is important to recycle metal:

  • When you recycle metal, it introduces mined metal into the country’s manufacturing industry. It means we don’t need to mine any more metal to stay abreast of the demand.
  • Most metals don’t degrade easily and discarding them can only contaminate and pollute water sources in the region. When you choose scrap metal recycling in Toronto, you are able to do your bit for the environment and reduce this burden.
  • Recycling is extremely convenient and can be done with the least amount of hassle. All you have to do is call us and we will ensure that the metal waste is picked up from your property. You have the option to drop off various metal items at certain points at a time that is convenient to you

Metals that Can be Recycled

15 Noteworthy Facts on Metal Recycling

Here’s an interesting fact: recycling one aluminum can save enough energy to run a TV for 3 hours. And while it can be a simple task to just throw your aluminum can into the recycling bin, chances are you haven’t considered the actual numbers and figures you are contributing to when it comes to scrap metal recycling. Most scrap metal is collected from old steel structures, cars, appliances, ships, railroads, factories, waste electronics and other sources that contain metal in some way. Scrap metal gets processed in factories where they melt it down to commodity grade material that is used to produce new products. There are plenty of noteworthy facts on metal recycling to discover.

Here are 15 interesting facts on metal recycling.

  1. Metal recycling is good for the national economy and the environment e.g. increased local employment and reduced emissions.
  2. Recycling 1-tonne of steel saves 1,136 kg of iron ore, 454 kg of coal and 18 kg of limestone
  3. You can test which metal is in your bin is by using a magnet. Aluminium metal is non-magnetic whereas steel is magnetic.
  4. Drink cans are generally made from aluminum while food cans are usually made from steel.
  5. Metal recycling helps recreate new product once the original items has reached the end of its useful life.
  6. Recycling scrap metals including iron and aluminum can be benefit local construction project such as roads and bridges.
  7. Scrap metals are refashioned for use in creating bikes, cars, aircraft and other modes of transportation.
  8. Scrap metals aids in storage and transportation of goods across the world with many shipping containers created from recycled metal.
  9. Reusing scrap metal has supported many industries to reduce their environment impact e.g. reduced mining of natural and scare resources.
  10. Recycled aluminum can be melted at a much lower temperature than new aluminum therefore saving on energy.
  11. Scrap metal recycling helps reduce Co2 emissions created through mining, transport and smelting.
  12. Recycling scrap metal reduces the need for landfills sites and leads to a positive effect on water supply, soil and land usage.
  13. Aluminum is made from a mined ore called Bauxite, which is converted into alumina, a fine white powder. This powder is then smelted at over 700°C, to become aluminum. The process is expensive and uses lots of resources including energy and fuel.
  14. The aluminum used in packaging is much more difficult to collect, since it is very light. It is discarded in every home, school, office, pub and restaurant without a thought so remember light metal e.g. kitchen foil.
  15. Scrap metal recycling is an essential part of the manufacturing industry. This includes steel, iron, and nonferrous metals like aluminum, copper and copper and lead. Using these secondary materials instead of virgin materials saves energy and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
zinc recycling toronto manville

Why is Zinc Recycling Different?

Zinc is used heavily in building structures like metal roofs, plumbing, structural support, and other such components. The recycling process is different because of the fact that most zinc material is used in conjunction with other metals (for example, the metal needs to be separated from steel in order to be recycled, which adds an extra step to the recycling process). Fortunately, technology has advanced enough to improve the process and now 90% of the collected products that contain zinc can be recycled through the zinc reclamation process.

The Separation Process

This means both zinc and steel can be extracted from the waste material easily and effectively. Galvanized steel products are the most common source of recycled zinc and are often recycled through the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) heating process. Here’s a brief description of it:

  • The scrap metal is placed inside the furnace and heated until the zinc becomes volatile.
  • At this stage, zinc separates from steel in a gaseous form and is collected from the furnace.
  • This gas is treated to turn it back to a solid state and it forms zinc dust.
  • The dust is then melted in a kiln, where it turns into zinc oxide.

Zinc oxide is one of the primary raw materials in the production of zinc and can be used to create the metal once again. This cycle can be repeated numerous times without any problems with the metal.

What are the Benefits of Recycling Zinc?

There are a number of environmental and economic benefits of zinc recycling in Toronto and these include:

  • Conserving a non-renewable resource – Zinc is a non-renewable resource and will eventually dry out. Recycled zinc makes up for 40% of worldwide usable zinc and this number will only increase as the recycling technology develops. It’s better to recycle and reuse zinc now than deal with its scarcity later.
  • Reducing waste – If zinc is recycled, it’s not filling the landfills and causing damage to the environment. The more zinc we recycle, the less it burdens the environment and the economy because maintaining landfills and increasing amounts of waste can cost money.
  • Impact of extraction on the environment – Zinc extraction can be a considerable burden on the environment. Dust, metal particles, chemicals, and harmful gasses are released into the environment during the extraction and refining process. While companies try to reduce emissions as much as they can, the process still harms the environment. The recycling process is safer and more affordable too.
